The First 30 Days of Growing a Beard: A Survival Guide

Posted by Kevin Leboeuf on

The first 30 days of growing a beard are itch, doubt, and patchy spots, and all three are normal and all three are temporary. Here's the short version: don't trim anything for the full 30 days, start beard oil in week one, wash three to five times a week, and ignore how it looks until day 30. Most beards that "couldn't grow in" were quit on, not incapable.

Week one: the easy part

Days one through seven are just stubble. Nothing to do yet except one thing: stop shaving your neck. The urge to "clean it up" now is how you end up with a beard that starts at your jawline and looks painted on. Leave the whole thing alone. All of it.

Weeks two and three: where most men quit

This is the itch window. The hairs you cut when you last shaved have sharp ends, and as they grow they curl back and scratch skin that's already drying out because every millimetre of new growth drinks up your skin's natural oil (sebum). It feels like the beard is rejecting you. It's not. It's asking for oil.

Start beard oil now if you haven't: a few drops each morning, worked down to the skin, not just brushed over the top. The itch usually settles within days of a consistent routine. Wash three to five times a week with an actual beard wash, head shampoo strips the little oil you have, and dry skin is the whole enemy this month.

This is also when the doubt shows up, because it grows in uneven. Cheeks lag behind the chin. One side outruns the other. Every beard on earth does this. Growth rates even out over months, and hair you think is missing is often just finer and shorter it darkens and thickens with time.

Week four: the turn

Somewhere around day 21 to 28, it slows itching, starts softening, and begins to look deliberate instead of accidental. Now, and not before, you can define a neckline if you want one. The rule: two fingers above your Adam's apple, follow the natural curve ear to ear, and never touch anything above it. Cheek lines can wait months. When in doubt, leave it.

The 30-day kit

You genuinely need two things this month: a beard oil and a beard wash. That's it. Balm and butter earn their place once there's length to hold and condition. Anything sold to you as a "growth serum" in month one is selling you patience in a bottle. We don't make one, and we'd tell you if it worked.

One thing worth knowing while you're buying: whatever you apply, your skin absorbs a good share of it. It's why everything Educated Beards® makes is certified organic under EcoCert and Cosmos Organic, formulated in-house, and made and shipped by us from Fredericton, New Brunswick. Your first beard deserves better than mystery ingredients.

Day 30 isn't the finish line it's the tryout. Get there without quitting, and the hard part is over. If you want the starter setup in one go, an organic beard oil and beard wash will carry you the whole month. See you on day 31.
