Beard Oil vs. Balm vs. Butter: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Posted by Kevin Leboeuf on

Short version: beard oil conditions the skin under your beard and is the one product every bearded man should use daily. Balm conditions too, but its job is light hold and shape. It's a styling product. Butter is the deep conditioner, for beards past the stubble stage that need real softening. Under an inch of growth, oil is all you need. Longer than that: oil every morning, butter a few nights a week, and balm only if your beard needs taming.

Beard oil: the foundation

Oil exists for your skin first, hair second. A growing beard drinks up your skin's natural oils faster than your face can produce them, which is where itch, flaking, and that tight dry feeling come from. A few drops worked down to the skin each morning replaces what the beard takes.

What's in the bottle matters more than the bottle. Ours are built on cold-pressed carrier oils Alicia chose during the 11 months of formulation before Educated Beards® launched, and every ingredient is certified organic under EcoCert and Cosmos Organic, the highest skincare standard in the world. Worth knowing when you're comparing labels: in Canada, a product needs just 5% organic ingredients to call itself organic.

Beard balm: conditioning plus control

Balm is oil plus butters and a natural wax. The wax is the point: it gives flyaways somewhere to be and holds a shape through the day. If your beard sticks out sideways by noon, balm fixes your morning. Scoop a little, melt it between your palms, work it through, shape with a comb.

One honest note: balm on top of oil is plenty of product. You don't need both slathered on every day. That's how beards end up greasy.

Beard butter: the deep conditioner

Butter sits between oil and balm: richer than oil, softer than balm, little to no hold. Its job is softening coarse, wiry hair, and it earns its keep on beards with a few months of growth. Best used at night. Work it in after your evening routine and let it do its thing while you sleep. If your beard feels like a scrub brush, this is the one you're missing.

So which do you buy?

New beard or short beard: oil. Just oil. Every morning.

Medium beard that misbehaves: oil in the morning, balm after to shape it.

Long or coarse beard: oil daily, butter at night two or three times a week, balm when you need the hold.

Can you use all three? Sure. Oil first (skin), butter or balm after (hair), just not all at once in quantity. Your beard will tell you what it needs: itchy means more oil, scratchy means butter, unruly means balm.

Every one of ours is formulated in-house, made in our shop in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and shipped by us. Nothing white-labelled, nothing we wouldn't put on our own faces. If you'd rather not choose at all, the Book of Beards has the full routine in one box.
